The money funds things like lighthouses, buoys, and other aids to navigation around Australia's coastline.\n\n**Who pays:** Commercial ships visiting Australian ports, calculated based on the ship's size (tonnage).\n\n**How the fees work:**\n- **First 5,000 tons:** 17 cents per ton\n- **Next 15,000 tons (5,001–20,000):** 17.1 cents per ton \n- **Next 30,000 tons (20,001–50,000):** 17 cents per ton\n- **Above 50,000 tons:** 15.5 cents per ton\n\nThis is a **tiered system** where larger ships pay slightly different rates for different portions of their total weight. The regulations replace older rules from 1992 and commenced on 1 October 2018.\n\n**Why it matters:** These fees ensure ships contribute to the cost of maintaining safe marine navigation infrastructure that benefits all maritime users."},"flash_summary_failed":{"failed":true,"reason":"A positive credit balance is required for all requests, including BYOK, so fallback providers remain available.
