rating powers. It is narrowly targeted to correct and substitute specific percentage figures used in the Katherine Town Council's published rate resolutions for the financial years 1997/98 and 1998/99 and to validate those levies. Back in 1997 and 1998, the Katherine Town Council accidentally used the wrong numbers when setting property rates (council rates) for two financial years (1997/98 and 1998/99). Specifically, they put decimal points in the wrong places — for example, using 0.0178% instead of 0.178%.\n\nThis Act:\n- **Corrects the percentages** — it lists the wrong numbers and the right numbers in two tables (Schedule 1 for 1997/98, Schedule 2 for 1998/99)\n- **Validates past decisions** — it declares that the rates already charged were legally valid, as if the correct percentages had been used all along\n- **Protects ratepayers and council** — it ensures people who paid rates don't get hit with back-charges, and the council doesn't face legal challenges over the error\n\n**Who it affects:**\n- Property owners in Katherine who paid rates in 1997/98 or 1998/99\n- The Katherine Town Council (now Katherine Town Council)\n\n**Why it matters:**\nWithout this law, there would be legal uncertainty about whether the rates were properly levied. Someone might have challenged their rates bill in court, or the council might have had to refund money. This Act tidies up the paperwork and makes sure everyone can move on."}},"importantCases":[],"_links":{"self":"/api/acts/local-government-katherine-rates-act-1999","history":"/api/acts/local-government-katherine-rates-act-1999/history","analysis":"/api/acts/local-government-katherine-rates-act-1999/analysis","conflicts":"/api/acts/local-government-katherine-rates-act-1999/conflicts","importantCases":"/api/acts/local-government-katherine-rates-act-1999/important-cases","documents":"/api/acts/local-government-katherine-rates-act-1999/documents"}}
