The amendments since 2011 have been minor technical updates — updating GPS datum references (GDA2020), extending the sunset date three times (2014, 2015, 2018, 2021, 2024, 2025), and deleting an obsolete regulation. The rules make it an offence to bring alcohol into or possess alcohol within a 50-kilometre radius of the community, with fines up to $5,000 for serious offenders.\n\n**Who it affects:**\n\n* **Residents and visitors to Kunawarritji** — generally cannot bring in or have alcohol in the restricted zone.\n* **Tourists travelling through** — get special treatment. They can carry alcohol through the area provided they don't drink it there and keep moving.\n* **Tourists camping at Well 33** — get an even bigger exception. They can actually possess *and* consume alcohol while at this specific camping ground on the famous Canning Stock Route.\n* **Police** — have powers to seize and destroy any alcohol they reasonably suspect is being carried illegally.\n\n**Why it matters:**\n\nThis is a targeted **harm minimisation** measure designed to reduce alcohol-related problems in a vulnerable remote Aboriginal community, while balancing the needs of tourism operators and travellers using the historic Canning Stock Route. The Well 33 exception recognises that this camping spot is a key stopover for four-wheel-drive tourists crossing the desert, allowing them to enjoy a drink without undermining the broader alcohol restrictions protecting the community.\n\nThe regulations are temporary (sunset) laws — they automatically expire in May 2028 unless the government renews them."},"flash_summary_failed":{"failed":true,"reason":"A positive credit balance is required for all requests, including BYOK, so fallback providers remain available.
