It works alongside the *Exhibited Animals Protection Act 1986* to regulate zoos, aquariums, circuses, mobile animal displays, and other places where animals are kept for public viewing.\n\n**Key things it covers:**\n\n*   **Who needs a licence:** Most animal display establishments need a licence, but there are exemptions for small fish tanks, certain agricultural shows, pet shops (for display only), and wildlife in their natural habitat.\n*   **Types of establishments:** It categorises displays into three types:\n    *   **Fixed establishments** – permanent zoos or aquariums\n    *   **Mobile establishments** – temporary displays like travelling animal shows\n    *   **Off-display establishments** – places where animals are kept but not shown to the public (like holding facilities)\n*   **Permit animals:** Dangerous or rare animals (like crocodiles, venomous snakes, big cats, and certain native wildlife) require a special permit on top of any licence. Schedule 2 lists exactly which species need permits.\n*   **Animal welfare standards:** Exhibitors must follow specific standards for housing, feeding, and caring for animals. These include rules about tethering (tying up animals), veterinary care, record-keeping, and ensuring animals don't escape.\n*   **Safety rules:** There are strict requirements for dangerous animals in \"drive-through\" areas (like safari parks), including having rescue vehicles and armed staff available.\n*   **Record keeping:** Exhibitors must keep detailed records of each animal's health, breeding, movements, and any incidents involving injury to people.\n*   **Fees and applications:** It sets out the costs for licences, permits, and renewals, with lower fees for small operators (minor establishments with 30 or fewer animals).\n\n**Who it affects:**\n\n*   Zoo and aquarium operators\n*   Circus owners\n*   Mobile animal educators\n*   Pet shops (in limited circumstances)\n*   Farmers showing animals at agricultural shows\n*   Anyone wanting to display wildlife to the public\n\n**Why it matters:**\n\nThis Regulation protects both animal welfare and public safety. It ensures animals are kept in appropriate conditions, prevents illegal wildlife trading, and makes sure exhibitors are accountable for their animals' wellbeing. It also provides a framework for conservation education and manages the risks of keeping dangerous animals near the public."}},"importantCases":[],"_links":{"self":"/api/acts/exhibited-animals-protection-regulation-2021","history":"/api/acts/exhibited-animals-protection-regulation-2021/history","analysis":"/api/acts/exhibited-animals-protection-regulation-2021/analysis","conflicts":"/api/acts/exhibited-animals-protection-regulation-2021/conflicts","importantCases":"/api/acts/exhibited-animals-protection-regulation-2021/important-cases","documents":"/api/acts/exhibited-animals-protection-regulation-2021/documents"}}
