It lists each coin’s denomination, metal (composition and purity), standard weight and allowable variation, diameter, thickness, shape, edge style, and the identified obverse and reverse designs. (See section 3 and Schedule 1.)\n\n- The Schedule is the operative part: Part 1 lists individual coin items (identified by item numbers) and the measurements and design codes for each; Part 2 explains the design codes (shape S1, obverse O1, reverse R339, etc.), including textual descriptions of the imagery and inscriptions that must appear on each face. (Schedule 1, Parts 1–2.)\n\n- The Determination is taken to have commenced on 15 September 2003. (Section 2.)\n\n- It explicitly states that these specifications do not alter any other Determination of coin specifications. (Section 4.)\n\n**Who this affects**\n\n- The Perth Mint and any persons or contractors involved in designing, striking, packaging, or marketing the listed coins: they must comply with the listed physical and design specifications (metal, weight tolerances, dimensions, inscriptions and motifs). (Section 3; Schedule 1.)\n\n- Buyers, dealers and holders of these coins: the Determination fixes the face denominations and the designs that constitute those specifically-authorised coins; collectors and bullion investors will be affected in the sense that the Determination governs which items are officially specified. (Schedule 1.)\n\n- Regulators and enforcement bodies: the specification creates an authoritative reference for testing and verifying whether a coin matches an authorised Perth Mint issue. (Schedule 1.)\n\n**Why it matters (official purpose and practical effects)**\n\n- Officially, the Determination authorises and records the detailed specifications of Perth Mint coins so there is a legal standard for weight, composition, dimensions and design for the identified coin issues. (Section 3; Schedule 1.)\n\n- Practical implications and trade-offs to note:\n - Who decides: the Parliamentary Secretary (acting under the Currency Act) sets the specifications. The Determination centralises technical choices about legal coin issues in an administrative instrument. (Introductory text; section 3.)\n - Who pays / who benefits: purchasers pay the market price for the coins; Perth Mint benefits from being able to market and sell authorised coins that carry recognised designs and face values. Collectors and bullion buyers benefit from legal certainty about the coins’ official attributes. The Determination itself does not set selling prices. (Schedule 1.)\n - Relation of face value to metal content: the Schedule sets a legal denomination for each coin (column 2). Those denominations are typically a fixed numeral (for example, $100 for a 1 oz gold coin appears in the Schedule). The instrument does not set or guarantee the market value of the metal content — buyers and sellers still face market-price risk for bullion content. (Schedule 1.)\n - Administrative and compliance burden: the document imposes a technical compliance requirement on the minting process (adhere to weights, tolerances, designs and inscriptions). For buyers and the public it mainly provides a reference; enforcement involves physical testing against the stated tolerances. (Section 3; Schedule 1.)\n - Competition and market effects: by specifying Perth Mint products as official coin issues, the Determination clarifies which Perth Mint items are authorised; it does not itself restrict other producers from issuing non-legal-tender bullion items, but it may affect market positioning because some buyers prefer officially-specified coins. (Section 3; Schedule 1.)\n - Implementation risks: errors in matching struck coins to the specification (wrong inscriptions, weights outside tolerances, incorrect alloys or missing design elements) would create conformity issues and potentially require corrective action for minting or recall. The Determination provides the objective standard to resolve such disputes. (Schedule 1.)\n\n**Concrete mechanics and examples**\n\n- The Schedule includes multiple series and metals: gold, platinum, silver and at least one cupro-nickel item, across many denominations and sizes — ranging from fractional ounce gold pieces up to 1‑kilogram coins. Each line item gives a precise weight and an allowable variance (e.g. 31.162 g ± 0.055 for a 1 oz gold coin) and assigns a design code for obverse and reverse imagery. (Schedule 1, Part 1.)\n\n- Part 2 decodes design symbols (for example: S1 = circular shape; E1 = continuous milled edge; O1 = obverse with the Queen’s effigy and standard inscriptions; R339 = a specific reverse showing ‘THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET’ with a kangaroo and tree, and the inscriptions required for year and fineness). Several reverse codes include conditional text depending on nominal weight (e.g. ‘X OZ’ versus ‘1 KILO’). (Schedule 1, Part 2.)\n\n**Net takeaways for a non-legal reader**\n\n- This instrument is a technical rulebook listing the exact appearance and physical standards for a batch of Perth Mint coins (weights, tolerances, metals, dimensions and the precise pictures and inscriptions required). (Section 3; Schedule 1.)\n\n- It puts an authoritative, testable specification in place so producers, buyers and regulators know which Perth Mint items are the officially specified coins. The immediate effect is administrative and market certainty rather than a change to broader currency policy.
