The only change is that these trustees now answer to the Synod instead of the Presbytery.\n- **Extends a deadline:** An earlier law required trustees to be elected for Presbyterian churches within six months, but many churches missed this window. This Act extends that deadline to seven years.\n- **Adds a loyalty clause:** The Synod only keeps these powers if it continues to follow the doctrines and discipline of Scotland's established Church of Scotland. If it breaks away doctrinally, the powers automatically lapse.\n\n**Who it affects:**\n- Presbyterian congregations in New South Wales (and by extension, Australia) connected to the Church of Scotland.\n- Trustees holding property for these churches.\n- Ministers whose salaries were paid from colonial government funds — they wouldn't get paid until their church had proper trustees appointed.\n\n**Why it matters:**\nThis was a practical housekeeping measure that allowed Scottish Presbyterianism in Australia to scale up from a state-level body to a national one without disrupting property ownership. It also ensured government-funded ministers couldn't draw salaries until their churches had proper legal structures in place to manage assets responsibly."},"flash_summary":{"complexity_score":3,"scope_assessment":{"changed":true,"description":"Yes.
