It **abolishes the old \"linguist bounty\"**—an antiquated bonus scheme for sailors with foreign language skills—and clears the deck for a modern **Language Proficiency Allowance**.\n\n**The practical effect:**\n* Navy personnel who speak strategic languages transition from the old \"bounty\" system to the new allowance framework\n* The change flips on automatically once the new Language Proficiency Allowance is formally established under the Defence Act\n\n**Who it affects:** Naval members receiving (or eligible for) language-related pay.\n\n**Why it matters:** The old \"bounty\" terminology and structure was outdated. This ensures naval staff with critical language skills get paid through a contemporary mechanism rather than a legacy scheme, preventing double-dipping or gaps in pay during the switchover."}},"importantCases":[],"_links":{"self":"/api/acts/c2004l05484","history":"/api/acts/c2004l05484/history","analysis":"/api/acts/c2004l05484/analysis","conflicts":"/api/acts/c2004l05484/conflicts","importantCases":"/api/acts/c2004l05484/important-cases","documents":"/api/acts/c2004l05484/documents"}}
