The payment repays a loan the bank gave to the government during World War II.\n\n**Why the loan existed**\n\nDuring the war, the government used emergency powers (the *National Security (Apple and Pear Acquisition) Regulations*) to take control of the nation's apple and pear crops. The Commonwealth Bank advanced the money needed to buy this fruit from growers. This Act simply appropriates (sets aside) the public funds to pay back that bank advance.\n\n**Who it affects**\n\nPrimarily the government and the Commonwealth Bank. Indirectly, it affects taxpayers (whose money repays the debt) and the apple and pear growers who would have been paid under the wartime acquisition scheme.\n\n**In short**: This is a straightforward debt repayment bill—using tax revenue to settle a wartime fruit-purchasing loan."}},"importantCases":[],"_links":{"self":"/api/acts/apple-and-pear-appropriation-act-1941","history":"/api/acts/apple-and-pear-appropriation-act-1941/history","analysis":"/api/acts/apple-and-pear-appropriation-act-1941/analysis","conflicts":"/api/acts/apple-and-pear-appropriation-act-1941/conflicts","importantCases":"/api/acts/apple-and-pear-appropriation-act-1941/important-cases","documents":"/api/acts/apple-and-pear-appropriation-act-1941/documents"}}
