Sterilisation surgery requires anaesthesia (except for very young male piglets).\n\n- **Housing standards**: \n - Sows (female breeding pigs) generally cannot be kept in individual stalls where they cannot turn around, with limited exceptions for mating and short-term management.\n - Farrowing crates (used when sows give birth) are restricted to maximum periods: 42 days normally, or 56 days if the sow is fostering extra piglets.\n - All housing must protect pigs from weather, predators, and injury, with proper ventilation and backup systems if using mechanical ventilation.\n\n- **Space requirements**: Pigs must have enough room to stand, lie down, and stretch fully. Specific minimum space standards are set by reference to an external 'Model Code'.\n\n- **Record keeping**: Farmers must maintain risk management systems, herd health programs, and records of stall use for certain periods.\n\n- **Penalties**: Breaches can result in fines up to 100 penalty units for companies or 50 for individuals. Most offences can also be dealt with via infringement notices (2 penalty units for individuals, 10 for companies).\n\n**Why it matters**: These regulations aim to improve animal welfare standards in pig farming, phasing out restrictive confinement practices like sow stalls and setting clear professional standards for those handling pigs."},"flash_summary":{"complexity_score":6,"scope_assessment":{"changed":false,"description":"The instrument operationalises the Animal Welfare Act by prescribing technical standards and procedural duties for pig keeping (care, housing, health treatments, confinement limits, records and penalties).
