It works alongside the main Administration and Probate Act 1969.\n\n**What it does:**\n- **Sets fees** for obtaining copies of wills and other probate documents (Schedule 1)\n- **Defines monetary thresholds** for different types of estate administration:\n - **$20,000** – threshold for \"small estates\" that can be administered with simplified procedures\n - **$70,000** – threshold for estates where a professional (like a lawyer) can administer without full court supervision\n - **$250,000** – threshold defining a \"small claim\" against an estate\n - **$370,000 and $530,000** – amounts determining how estates are divided when someone dies without a will (intestacy)\n- **Lists \"relevant countries\"** (mostly Commonwealth nations) whose probate documents are recognised in the NT (Schedule 2)\n- **Specifies what information** must be included when a professional gives notice they intend to administer an estate\n- **Contains transitional rules** about when new provisions apply to estates already being administered versus new ones\n\n**Who it affects:**\n- Executors and administrators managing deceased estates\n- Lawyers and other professionals handling probate matters\n- People making claims against estates\n- Beneficiaries waiting for distributions\n\n**Why it matters:**\nThese regulations determine how much it costs to access probate documents, what procedures apply based on estate size, and how estates are divided when there's no will.
