Sustained contact between the occupant and the reading lights could result in possible injury to the occupant. Additionally, inadvertent contact could also occur between various flammable materials (sheets, blankets, flightcrew clothing) and the sidewall- mounted reading lights. Such contact between the flammable materials and the reading lights could cause charring or melting of the heated material and consequent emission of toxic or noxious gases.\n\nThis Directive requires removal of each sidewall- mounted reading light in the attendant crew rest compartment, installation of cover plates in place of the existing reading lights, together with removal of each reading light switch and installation of a new reading light in place of the existing light switch.\n\n![Signature of James Coyne, Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.](image.002.png)  \n\nJames Coyne\n\nDelegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority 24 May 2002\n\n![](image.001.png)  \n\nThe above AD is notified in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette on 19 June 2002.","sortOrder":1}],"analysis":{"flash_summary_failed":{"failed":true,"reason":"Unauthenticated. It applies to Boeing 767-300 planes that were modified with a particular US certification (FAA Supplemental Type Certificate ST00973WI-D). The problem: the reading lights mounted on the walls in the crew rest area are positioned where sleeping crew members might touch them, causing burns. Also, bedding or clothing could touch these hot lights, creating fire risks or toxic fumes. The fix: airlines must remove the wall-mounted reading lights and cover the holes, then install new reading lights where the old light switches were located. This must be done within 60 days of 11 July 2002."}},"importantCases":[],"_links":{"self":"/api/acts/ad-b767-172-crew-rest-compartment-reading-lights","history":"/api/acts/ad-b767-172-crew-rest-compartment-reading-lights/history","analysis":"/api/acts/ad-b767-172-crew-rest-compartment-reading-lights/analysis","conflicts":"/api/acts/ad-b767-172-crew-rest-compartment-reading-lights/conflicts","importantCases":"/api/acts/ad-b767-172-crew-rest-compartment-reading-lights/important-cases","documents":"/api/acts/ad-b767-172-crew-rest-compartment-reading-lights/documents"}}
