The fractures have been attributed to corrosion and/or cracking. In one case, the fracture caused the flap to jam and resulted in an air turnback. In another case, the fractures occurred in the area of the upper journal, which is not covered by SB 747-57A2310 (AD/B747/259) inspections. The actions required by this Directive are necessary to detect and correct cracking and other damage of the actuator attach fittings of the trailing edge flaps, which could result in abnormal operation or retraction of a flap, and possible loss of control of the aircraft. |\n\n|     | Amendment 1 is issued in response to FAA AD 2005-20-18 which supersedes FAA ADs 2001-13-12 (AD/B747/259) and 2003-08-11 (this Directive). For certain aircraft, this Directive requires new inspections for discrepancies of the actuator attach fittings of the trailing edge flaps, and follow-on and corrective actions if necessary, which ends the repetitive inspections of the superseded FAA ADs. For all aircraft, this Directive requires repetitive overhaul/replacements of the actuator attach fittings of both the inboard and outboard flaps. |\n| --- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |\n\n![](image.001.png)  \nDavid Villiers  \nDelegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority\n\n30 November 2005","sortOrder":0},{"sectionNumber":"AD/B747/290 Amdt 1","sectionType":"part","heading":"AD/B747/290 Amdt 1","content":"## AD/B747/290 Amdt 1","sortOrder":1},{"sectionNumber":"Trailing Edge Flap Actuator Attach Fitti","sectionType":"part","heading":"Trailing Edge Flap Actuator Attach Fittings - 2","content":"## Trailing Edge Flap Actuator Attach Fittings - 2","sortOrder":2},{"sectionNumber":"1/2006","sectionType":"part","heading":"1/2006","content":"## 1/2006","sortOrder":3}],"analysis":{"flash_summary":{"complexity_score":4,"scope_assessment":{"changed":true,"description":"Amendment 1 expands and refines the prior regulatory approach. It applies to all Boeing 747 series aircraft (including passenger, cargo, and short-range variants).\n\n**What it does:**\n- Requires airlines and aircraft operators to inspect the **trailing edge flap actuator attach fittings** — these are the metal brackets that connect the flaps (the movable wing surfaces used during takeoff and landing) to their hydraulic actuators.\n- Mandates **new inspections** to detect cracks and corrosion in these fittings, particularly in areas not covered by previous safety orders.\n- Requires **repetitive overhauls or replacements** of these fittings on both inboard and outboard flaps to prevent failures.\n\n**Why it matters:**\nThe FAA (American aviation regulator) found **three cases where these fittings fractured** due to corrosion or cracking. In one incident, a flap jammed and forced the aircraft to turn back. In another, the crack appeared in a location previous inspections missed. If these fittings fail, flaps can malfunction — potentially causing loss of aircraft control.\n\n**Who must comply:**\nAll operators of Boeing 747-100, -200, -300, -400 series and 747SR aircraft must follow the technical requirements of the referenced FAA directive (AD 2005-20-18) and Boeing service bulletins by **19 January 2006**."}},"importantCases":[],"_links":{"self":"/api/acts/ad-b747-290-amdt-1-trailing-edge-flap-actuator-attach-fittings-2","history":"/api/acts/ad-b747-290-amdt-1-trailing-edge-flap-actuator-attach-fittings-2/history","analysis":"/api/acts/ad-b747-290-amdt-1-trailing-edge-flap-actuator-attach-fittings-2/analysis","conflicts":"/api/acts/ad-b747-290-amdt-1-trailing-edge-flap-actuator-attach-fittings-2/conflicts","importantCases":"/api/acts/ad-b747-290-amdt-1-trailing-edge-flap-actuator-attach-fittings-2/important-cases","documents":"/api/acts/ad-b747-290-amdt-1-trailing-edge-flap-actuator-attach-fittings-2/documents"}}
