One of the cracks was almost long enough to jeopardise the residual strength capability of the upper chord of the rear spar. Such cracking could result in structural failure of the wing and fuel leaks in the aircraft.Amendment 1 is issued in response to a new FAA AD, which requires new repetitive inspections to detect cracks, corrosion, minor surface defects, and existing stop-drilled repairs of cracks in the upper and lower chords of the front and rear spars of the wing. The new AD also requires repairs be carried out if necessary. |\n\n![](image.001.png) \nDavid Villiers \nDelegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority\n\n27 April 2005","sortOrder":0},{"sectionNumber":"AD/B727/182 Amdt 1","sectionType":"part","heading":"AD/B727/182 Amdt 1","content":"## AD/B727/182 Amdt 1","sortOrder":1},{"sectionNumber":"Wing Rear Spar Upper Chord","sectionType":"part","heading":"Wing Rear Spar Upper Chord","content":"## Wing Rear Spar Upper Chord","sortOrder":2},{"sectionNumber":"6/2005","sectionType":"part","heading":"6/2005","content":"## 6/2005","sortOrder":3}],"analysis":{"flash_summary":{"complexity_score":5,"scope_assessment":{"changed":true,"description":"Amendment 1 broadens the original focus. It applies to **Boeing 727 series aircraft** (specifically line numbers 1 through 1832).\n\n**What it does:**\n- Requires airlines and aircraft operators to inspect the **wing rear spar upper chord** — a critical structural component of the wing — for cracks, corrosion, and other damage.\n- The inspections must follow specific technical instructions from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA AD 2005-05-19).\n- If problems are found, repairs must be carried out.\n\n**Why it matters:**\n- The FAA discovered **stress corrosion cracking** in this part of the wing. One crack was nearly severe enough to compromise the wing's structural integrity.\n- If left unchecked, this could lead to **structural failure of the wing** and **fuel leaks** — potentially catastrophic in flight.\n\n**Who must comply:**\n- Owners and operators of the specified Boeing 727 models.\n- Compliance is mandatory and time-sensitive, with the directive taking effect on **9 June 2005**.\n\n**Key point:** This is an **amendment** (Amendment 1) that expands the original safety order to include additional inspections of both front and rear wing spars, not just the rear spar upper chord mentioned in the original directive."},"flash_summary_failed":{"failed":true,"reason":"Unauthenticated.
