operator of two instances of metallic shavings in the vicinity of the jackscrew assembly and gimbal nut of the horizontal stabiliser. Excessive wear of the jackscrew assembly of the horizontal stabiliser could result in loss of vertical control of the aircraft.Amendment 1, effective 2 November 2000, was issued in response to a new FAA AD which required inspecting for metallic particles in the lubrication for the jackscrew assembly, inspection of the surrounding area to detect any discrepancy, and provided follow-on and corrective actions. This amendment updates the referenced service bulletin revision status, as well as providing some clarification of the alternative method of compliance provisions. The original issue of this Airworthiness Directive became effective on 5 October 2000. |\n\n![](image.001.png) \nDavid Villiers \nDelegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority\n\n25 May 2005","sortOrder":0},{"sectionNumber":"AD/B717/1 Amdt 2","sectionType":"part","heading":"AD/B717/1 Amdt 2","content":"## AD/B717/1 Amdt 2","sortOrder":1},{"sectionNumber":"Horizontal Stabiliser Jackscrew","sectionType":"part","heading":"Horizontal Stabiliser Jackscrew","content":"## Horizontal Stabiliser Jackscrew","sortOrder":2},{"sectionNumber":"7/2005","sectionType":"part","heading":"7/2005","content":"## 7/2005","sortOrder":3}],"analysis":{"flash_summary":{"complexity_score":3,"scope_assessment":{"changed":false,"description":"The amendment updates the referenced Boeing service bulletin revision and clarifies alternate method of compliance provisions but does not change applicability (all Model 717-200) or the core requirement to perform inspections and corrective actions per FAA AD 2000-15-15."},"complexity_factors":["Cross-reference to an external foreign regulator document (FAA AD 2000-15-15) increases dependency on a non-Australian instrument (Requirement).","Reliance on a specific manufacturer service bulletin revision (Boeing SB 717-27-A0002 Rev 3) means operators must follow detailed technical instructions in that SB (Requirement).","Alternate Methods of Compliance (AMOC) require FAA approval, creating an approval/coordination step for operators seeking deviations (Requirement / Background).","Technical nature of inspections (search for metallic shavings, wear of jackscrew/gimbal nut) imposes maintenance skill, tooling and parts needs on operators and MRO providers (Background / Requirement).","Compliance scheduling and record-keeping obligations are set by the referenced documents rather than in the amendment text itself, making practical compliance dependent on those external timelines (Compliance).","Amendment history and effective dates (original AD, Amendment 1, this Amendment) require operators to track revisions and ensure they use the current approved SB revision (Background)."],"plain_english_summary":"This amendment requires operators of all Boeing 717‑200 aircraft to inspect and, if needed, repair the horizontal stabiliser jackscrew in accordance with FAA AD 2000‑15‑15 and Boeing Service Bulletin 717‑27‑A0002 Revision 3 (or an FAA‑approved later revision). \n\nIt updates the referenced service bulletin and clarifies what counts as an alternate method of compliance; the applicability and core inspection requirement remain unchanged. It requires owners and operators of **Boeing 717-200 aircraft** to inspect and maintain a specific part called the **horizontal stabiliser jackscrew**.\n\n**What the problem is:**\nThe US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) found metallic shavings near this jackscrew assembly on two occasions. This indicates excessive wear, which could cause the crew to lose control of the aircraft's pitch (up/down movement) — a serious safety risk.\n\n**What must be done:**\n- Follow the technical instructions in **FAA AD 2000-15-15**\n- Use **Boeing Service Bulletin 717-27-A0002 Revision 3** (or a later FAA-approved version) to carry out the work\n- This includes inspecting for metal particles in the lubrication, checking the surrounding area, and taking corrective action if problems are found\n\n**Why this matters:**\nThis amendment (version 2) updates which technical document version operators should use and clarifies how they can seek alternative compliance methods. It ensures Australian-registered Boeing 717s meet the same safety standards as US-registered ones."},"flash_summary_failed":{"failed":true,"reason":"A positive credit balance is required for all requests, including BYOK, so fallback providers remain available.
