(Requirement 1)\n- For A330 aircraft that are being operated with certain Minimum Equipment List (MMEL) items in effect — specifically MMEL item 24-22-01 (AC Main Generation) or MMEL item 36-11-01 (Bleed Air Supply System failure) — there is an additional temporary requirement to check the differential pressure indicator button on the lube filter and the generator scavenge filter before each flight until a specified cut-off date. (Requirement 2)\n- The AD gives an exception: the repetitive pre-flight check in Requirement 2 is not required for aircraft operating under MMEL item 36-11-01 if the APU generator has been removed or deactivated. (Requirement 2)\n- The AD points operators to Airbus All Operators Telex (AOT) A330-24A3042 dated 22 March 2007 (or later EASA-approved revisions) for the exact inspection and corrective-action procedures. (Requirement 1 & 2)\n\n**Who this affects**\n\n- Airlines and operators of Airbus A330 series aeroplanes, and their maintenance organisations and personnel who perform APU and filter inspections and corrective maintenance. Ground operations staff who perform pre-flight checks are also affected where the repetitive pre-flight check applies. \n\n**Why it matters (practical mechanics and risk basis)**\n\n- The AD was prompted by reports of two APU generator failures on the ground that produced loud noises and automatic APU shutdowns; preliminary investigation found uncontained APU generator failures that caused structural damage in the APU compartment and, in one case, to the stabiliser compartment. (Background)\n- Loose generator parts or debris in the scavenge-oil pump inlet screen could damage the APU firewall and reduce fire-extinguishing capability, increasing the risk of an uncontrolled fire in the APU area. The inspection is intended to determine fleet status quickly (one-time inspection) and to prevent further events while investigations continue. (Background; Requirement 1)\n\n**How it works in practice (who pays, who decides, and what changes)**\n\n- Who pays: the aircraft operator bears the direct costs — technician labour to perform the inspection, potential replacement parts, corrective maintenance, and possible aircraft downtime. \n- Who decides: operators must follow the AOT procedures and comply with the AD; maintenance organisations must certify the work. An operator can choose to remove or deactivate the APU generator (where operationally acceptable) to avoid the repetitive pre-flight check for the specific MMEL condition noted. (Requirement 2)\n- Behavioural change: operators must schedule and complete a one-time inspection fleet-wide by the compliance deadline, and affected operators may need to add a pre-flight differential-pressure check until the temporary deadline or take the step of removing/deactivating the APU generator to eliminate that recurring check. (Compliance; Requirement 2)\n\n**Costs, incentives and trade-offs**\n\n- Direct costs: labour for inspection, any corrective actions (cleaning, parts replacement), and aircraft downtime. These are concentrated on operators of the A330 fleet.\n- Incentives: since removing or deactivating the APU generator relieves an operator from the repetitive check under one MMEL condition, operators face a trade-off between the operational value of the APU (for ground power or other uses) and the cost and time of repeated pre-flight checks. Operators with frequent short flights may judge repeated checks more burdensome and may elect deactivation, which has operational consequences.\n- Opportunity cost: time spent on inspections and repeated pre-flight checks displaces other maintenance or operational activity and can reduce aircraft availability.\n- Implementation risk and compliance burden: the AD depends on operators following the AOT procedures precisely; inconsistent interpretation or limited access to the inlet screen (physical access constraints) could increase labour time or prolong grounding. The temporary nature of the repetitive checks concentrates effort in the short term (compliance dates are specified). (Requirement 1; Compliance)\n\n**Administrative and cross-reference notes**\n\n- The AD points to Airbus AOT A330-24A3042 (22 March 2007) for the detailed inspection/corrective steps and to EASA AD No. 2007-0080-R1 for related regulatory history. The AD also clarifies that the repetitive check is not required in a limited circumstance (APU generator removed/deactivated) for one of the MMEL conditions. (Requirement 1 & 2)\n\n**Summary of purpose-claim and practical test**\n\n- Stated purpose: to obtain a complete fleet inspection status quickly and to prevent further uncontained APU generator failures that could cause structural damage and fire risk (Background). \n- Practical test against costs and incentives: the AD enforces a one-time data-gathering inspection (low to moderate concentrated cost) and imposes a temporary pre-flight check for a subset of operations (potentially high operational burden while in effect). It creates a clear operational choice for affected operators (perform repeated checks or remove/deactivate the APU generator) that shifts costs between maintenance effort and operational capability.
